Why visit Nikko?

Nikko is a mountain town about two hours north of Tokyo, known for its lavishly decorated shrines and temples set in cedar forests, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for the lakes, waterfalls and hot springs of Nikko National Park above it.

Visit Toshogu, the mausoleum of the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, with its gold-leaf carvings, the Yomeimon gate, the three wise monkeys and the sleeping cat. Nearby are the Futarasan Shrine and Rinnoji Temple. The red Shinkyo Bridge crosses the river at the entrance to the shrine area. Walk the Kanmangafuchi Abyss, a riverside path lined with stone Jizo statues. Up the hairpin road of Irohazaka, Lake Chuzenji sits under Mount Nantai, and the Kegon Falls drop almost 100 metres. Further up are the Senjogahara marshland and the hot springs of Yumoto. Autumn colours are spectacular from October. Try yuba, tofu skin, which is Nikko's speciality.
