Why visit Nemea?

Nemea is a small town in the hills of Corinthia, in the northeast Peloponnese, and the heart of Greece's largest red wine region. Rows of vines cover the valleys around it, almost all of them Agiorgitiko, the local red grape that gives deep, fruity wines. Many family wineries in and around Nemea and the nearby village of Koutsi open their cellars for tastings, especially in late summer during the harvest.

History here goes back to myth: this is where Heracles killed the Nemean lion, the first of his twelve labours. At Ancient Nemea you can walk around the Temple of Zeus, where several tall Doric columns have been raised again, and see finds from the site in the small archaeological museum. A short drive away is the ancient stadium, where the Nemean Games were held; you enter it through a vaulted stone tunnel used by athletes more than two thousand years ago, and modern Nemean Games are still held here every four years. Nemea is an easy base for day trips to Mycenae, Nafplio and Ancient Corinth, and to Lake Stymfalia in the mountains. The best time to visit is April to June and September to October.
