Why visit Naoshima?

Naoshima is a small island in the Seto Inland Sea, in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. Once a quiet fishing island, it has become one of the world's most famous destinations for contemporary art and architecture. It is reached by ferry from Uno port in Okayama Prefecture or from Takamatsu.

The Chichu Art Museum, designed by Tadao Ando and built mostly underground, displays works by Claude Monet, James Turrell and Walter De Maria in natural light. Benesse House combines a museum and hotel, with art placed indoors and along the coast. The Lee Ufan Museum and Ando Museum are also highlights. Yayoi Kusama's yellow and red pumpkin sculptures, by the sea, are the island's most photographed artworks. In the village of Honmura, the Art House Project turns old houses and a shrine into art installations. Neighbouring Teshima, home to the Teshima Art Museum, makes a great day trip, and the Setouchi Triennale art festival is held across the islands every three years.
