Why visit Nagasaki?

Nagasaki is a port city on the island of Kyushu in south-western Japan, built around a deep harbour among green hills. For centuries it was Japan's main window to the outside world, with Dutch and Chinese traders, and it is also, with Hiroshima, one of the two cities destroyed by an atomic bomb in 1945.

Visit the Atomic Bomb Museum and the Peace Park with its large Peace Statue, then the Dejima site, the reconstructed island where Dutch traders lived. Glover Garden, on a hillside, has Western-style houses from the 19th century with views over the harbour, and Oura Church is the oldest standing church in Japan. Explore the Chinatown and the Meganebashi, the Spectacles Bridge. Take the ropeway up Mount Inasa for one of Japan's best night views. Boat tours go to Hashima, known as Gunkanjima or Battleship Island, an abandoned coal-mining island. Try champon noodles, castella sponge cake and Turkish rice.
