Why visit Miyajima?

Miyajima, officially Itsukushima, is a sacred island in the Seto Inland Sea near Hiroshima, famous for the great vermilion torii gate that seems to float on the water at high tide. The Itsukushima Shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Japan's most celebrated views.

See the shrine and torii at high tide, when they appear to float, and walk out to the gate at low tide. Tame deer wander the streets. The five-storey pagoda and Senjokaku hall stand on a hill above the shrine, and Daisho-in temple has hundreds of small statues and a path of prayer wheels. Take the ropeway or hike up Mount Misen for views over the islands of the Inland Sea. The island is quiet in the evening after the day visitors leave, and staying overnight in a ryokan lets you see the torii lit up. Ferries take about ten minutes from Miyajimaguchi. Try grilled oysters, anago (conger eel) on rice and momiji manju cakes.
