Why visit Matsumoto?

Matsumoto is a city in Nagano prefecture in the Japanese Alps, best known for Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's original castles and a National Treasure. Its black wooden keep, nicknamed the Crow Castle, stands against a backdrop of snowy peaks.

Climb the steep wooden stairs inside the castle keep, which dates from the late 16th century, and walk around the moat. Nakamachi Street has white-walled storehouses turned into shops and cafes, and Nawate Street is a riverside market lane. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art has a collection of works by Yayoi Kusama, who was born here. The city is the gateway to Kamikochi, a high mountain valley with walking trails along the clear Azusa River under the Hotaka peaks, open from mid-April to mid-November. Daio Wasabi Farm, in nearby Azumino, has clear streams and waterwheels. Try soba noodles, horse sashimi and wasabi ice cream.
