Why visit Marathon?

Marathon, about 40 kilometres north-east of Athens, gave its name to the long-distance race. In 490 BC the Athenians defeated the Persian army on the plain here, and according to tradition a messenger ran all the way to Athens to announce the victory, the story behind the modern marathon.

The Tomb of the Athenians, a mound raised over the 192 Athenian dead, still stands on the plain, and the Archaeological Museum of Marathon displays finds from the area. The start of the Athens Classic Marathon is in the town, with a small museum dedicated to the race and its history. Nearby, Lake Marathon is held back by a dam faced entirely in marble, and the long beach at Schinias, backed by a protected pine forest and wetland, is one of the best close to the capital. Rowing events of the 2004 Olympics were held at Schinias. Combine a visit with the sanctuary of Rhamnous, the temple of Nemesis on the coast to the north.
