Why visit Limeni?

Limeni is a tiny fishing village in the Mani, just below Areopoli, set on a small bay with water so clear and turquoise that it has become one of the most photographed spots in the Peloponnese. A handful of stone houses and tower houses line the shore, and there is no sandy beach: you swim off the rocks and from ladders straight into deep, transparent water.

On the edge of the bay stands the restored tower house of Petrobey Mavromichalis, the Maniot leader of the 1821 uprising. Fish tavernas sit right at the water's edge, and eating there at sunset is the main event of the day. Limeni is a good, peaceful base for exploring the Mani: Areopoli is a few minutes uphill, the Diros caves are a short drive south, and the coast road continues past Mezapos and Vathia to Cape Tainaro. North along the coast are Itylo and its castle, and the harbour town of Gerolimenas.
