Why visit Lake Plastiras?
Lake Plastiras is an artificial lake in the mountains of Karditsa in central Greece, created in the 1960s by damming the Tavropos river. Surrounded by the pine and oak forests of the Agrafa mountains, it is one of the most popular nature escapes in mainland Greece, with an altitude of around 800 metres that keeps summers cool.
A road circles the lake, passing viewpoints, the dam itself and villages such as Neochori, Kalyvia Pezoulas, Lampero and Kryoneri, many with stone guesthouses overlooking the water. Activities include horse riding, cycling, canoeing and walking forest trails. The Monastery of Korona, on a hill nearby, offers wide views, and the Botanical Garden at Neochori and the Pezoula mountain views are good stops. In autumn the forests change colour and in winter snow often covers the slopes, so the lake is a year-round destination. Eat grilled meat, local cheese and trout in the village tavernas.
