Why visit Kobe?

Kobe is a port city in Japan's Kansai region, between the sea and the Rokko mountains, about 20 minutes from Osaka by train. Open to foreign trade since the 19th century, it has a cosmopolitan feel, with Western-style houses, a Chinatown and the world-famous Kobe beef.

Walk the Harborland and Meriken Park waterfront with the red Kobe Port Tower and the Port of Kobe Earthquake Memorial, which remembers the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake. The Kitano district has the Ijinkan, the 19th-century homes of foreign merchants, and Nankinmachi is the city's lively Chinatown. Ride the Shin-Kobe Ropeway to the Nunobiki Herb Gardens and the Nunobiki waterfall, or take the cable car up Mount Rokko for the night view. Arima Onsen, one of Japan's oldest hot spring towns, is on the other side of the mountain. Himeji Castle is a short train ride away. Try Kobe beef teppanyaki, sake from the Nada breweries and akashiyaki dumplings.
