Why visit Khiva?

Khiva is an ancient Silk Road city in the Khorezm region of western Uzbekistan, near the Amu Darya river. Its walled inner town, Itchan Kala, is so well preserved that it feels like an open-air museum. Itchan Kala was the first site in Central Asia to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Walking along the mud-brick walls of Itchan Kala gives wide views over the domes, minarets and flat rooftops. The Kalta Minor minaret, short, wide and covered in turquoise tiles, was never finished and is the symbol of the city. The Islam Khoja Minaret is the tallest in Khiva and can be climbed for a panoramic view. The Juma Mosque is famous for its forest of carved wooden columns, some of them centuries old. Kunya Ark fortress and the Tash Hauli Palace, with its beautiful tiled courtyards, show how the khans of Khiva lived. Try shivit oshi, green dill noodles that are a speciality of Khorezm.
