Why visit Kastellorizo?
Kastellorizo, officially Megisti, is the easternmost inhabited Greek island, a tiny speck of the Dodecanese sitting barely two kilometres off the Turkish coast at Kaş. Its single harbour town is one of the most photographed in the Aegean: a horseshoe of neoclassical mansions painted in ochre, blue and red, reflected in water so still it looks like glass. The island became widely known through the Oscar-winning film Mediterraneo, which was shot here.
Life is slow and the sights are close together. Climb to the red-stone Castle of the Knights above the harbour, walk up to the Lycian rock-cut tomb carved into the cliff, and take a boat to the Blue Grotto (Fokiali), where the light turns the water an electric blue. Swim off the harbour steps, as locals do, and in the evening eat grilled fish and island specialities along the waterfront. Getting here takes effort — flights from Rhodes or a long ferry — and that is exactly why it stays so quiet.
