Why visit Amritsar?

Amritsar, in the north Indian state of Punjab near the border with Pakistan, is the spiritual centre of Sikhism and home to the Golden Temple, Harmandir Sahib, one of the most moving places to visit in India. The gilded temple sits in the middle of a sacred pool, and pilgrims walk around it day and night.

Anyone is welcome, regardless of religion, provided the head is covered. The temple's community kitchen, the langar, serves free meals to tens of thousands of people every day, prepared and served by volunteers. Nearby, Jallianwala Bagh is the memorial garden marking the massacre of 1919, a key moment in India's independence movement, and the Partition Museum tells the story of 1947. Every evening at the Attari–Wagah border, about 30 kilometres away, crowds gather for the energetic flag-lowering ceremony between Indian and Pakistani soldiers. Amritsar is also known for its food: Amritsari kulcha, lassi and rich Punjabi dishes in its famous dhabas.
