Why visit Jeonju?

Jeonju, in south-western South Korea, is known as the home of bibimbap and for its hanok village, one of the largest collections of traditional Korean houses in the country. It was an important city of the Joseon dynasty, whose founder's portrait is kept here, and it is famous throughout Korea for its food.

Walk the Jeonju Hanok Village with more than 600 traditional tiled-roof houses, many now guesthouses, tea houses and craft workshops, and rent a hanbok to stroll the lanes. See Gyeonggijeon Shrine, which holds the portrait of King Taejo, and the red-brick Jeondong Catholic Cathedral. Climb Omokdae for a view over the rooftops. The Nambu Market has a night market and a youth market with small cafes and shops. Stay in a hanok guesthouse and sleep on a heated floor. Jeonju also holds an international film festival. Eat Jeonju bibimbap, kongnamul gukbap (bean-sprout soup) and makgeolli rice wine.
