Why visit Sokcho?

Sokcho is a fishing port on South Korea's north-east coast, between the East Sea and the granite peaks of Seoraksan National Park. It is the main base for hiking in Seorak, one of Korea's most famous mountains, and a relaxed seaside town with beaches and fresh seafood.

In Seoraksan National Park, take the cable car towards Gwongeumseong fortress, walk to the giant bronze Buddha of Sinheungsa temple and climb Ulsanbawi, a granite ridge with views over the coast. Longer trails lead to Daecheongbong, the highest peak. Autumn colours in October draw huge crowds. In the town, Abai Village was settled by refugees from the North during the Korean War; you cross to it on a small hand-pulled ferry. Sokcho Beach and Yeonggeumjeong pavilion are good for sunrise, and the Daepo port and Sokcho Central Market have seafood stalls. Try squid sundae, fresh hoe (raw fish) and Abai sundae.
