Why visit Heraklion?
Heraklion is Crete's capital and its busiest gateway, and it rewards anyone who stays longer than the airport transfer. Five kilometres south of the centre lies Knossos, the great Minoan palace whose restored throne room and painted colonnades still shape how we picture Bronze Age Crete. The finds themselves — the Phaistos Disc, the bull-leaping fresco, the snake goddess figurines — fill the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, one of the most important collections in Europe and a must before or after Knossos.
The old town is compact and walkable. The Venetian walls ring the centre, and on the Martinengo Bastion you can visit the grave of Nikos Kazantzakis. Down at the harbour the Koules fortress guards the old port, while Lion Square with the Morosini Fountain is where the city meets for coffee. Eat bougatsa for breakfast near the fountain, then dakos, staka and grilled lamb in the tavernas around 1866 Street market. Day trips are easy: the beaches of Agia Pelagia, the wine villages of Archanes, and the long south-coast road to Matala.
