Why visit Gythio?

Gythio is a small harbour town on the Laconian Gulf and the traditional gateway to the Mani peninsula. Its waterfront of pastel neoclassical houses climbs the hillside above a harbour full of fishing boats, and the fish tavernas along the quay serve octopus hung to dry in the sun right beside your table.

A causeway leads to the islet of Marathonisi, ancient Kranai, where legend says Paris and Helen spent their first night after fleeing Sparta; today it holds a lighthouse and the Tzanetakis tower, home to a small museum. South of town stretch long sandy beaches such as Mavrovouni, popular with windsurfers, and the shipwreck of the Dimitrios lies beached at Valtaki, a favourite photo stop. From Gythio it is a short drive into the Mani, with its stone tower villages, the Diros caves and the dramatic coast down to Cape Tainaro, and Sparta and Mystras are under an hour away.
