Why visit Georgetown?

Georgetown is the capital of Guyana, on the Atlantic coast of South America where the Demerara River meets the sea. Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America, and its capital has a mixed heritage of Indian, African, Indigenous, Chinese and European influences that you can taste in its food and see in its streets. Georgetown is also the main base for exploring the country's vast rainforest interior, and above all for flights to Kaieteur Falls.

The city is known for its wooden colonial buildings, painted white and set along wide, tree-lined avenues. The highlight is St George's Cathedral, a huge white wooden church. Stabroek Market, with its iron clock tower, is the busy centre of daily life, and the Botanical Gardens and Promenade Gardens offer green, quiet breaks. In the evening, locals walk along the Seawall that protects the low-lying city from the ocean. The most popular excursion is a day trip by small plane to Kaieteur Falls, where the Potaro River plunges in a single tall drop into a deep gorge surrounded by rainforest. Many trips also stop at other falls on the way. Visitors arrive at Cheddi Jagan International Airport, outside the city. The drier periods, roughly February to April and September to November, are the best time to visit.
