Why visit Asuncion?

Asunción is the capital of Paraguay, one of the oldest cities in South America, set on the eastern bank of the Paraguay River. Across the water to the west lies the wide, flat Chaco region. Asunción is not a polished tourist city, but it is friendly, affordable and full of everyday character, with colonial buildings, leafy plazas and a strong local food culture.

In the historic centre, the Panteón Nacional de los Héroes holds the remains of Paraguay's national heroes and is watched over by a ceremonial guard. The Casa de la Independencia is the colonial house where the plan for independence from Spain was made in 1811, now a small museum. Loma San Jerónimo, a hillside neighbourhood of brightly painted houses and steep lanes, is pleasant to walk around. Mercado 4 is a huge, busy market selling almost anything. In the evening, join locals on the Costanera, the riverside promenade. Along the way, try tereré, cold yerba mate shared from a cup, chipa, a cheese bread made with cassava starch, and sopa paraguaya, a dense corn bread despite its name. For a day trip, San Bernardino on Lake Ypacaraí is a popular summer escape. The best time to visit is May to September, when temperatures are milder; summers are very hot.
