Why visit Dili?

Dili is the small, easygoing capital of Timor-Leste, one of the youngest countries in Asia, set on a wide bay on the north coast of the island of Timor. Few tourists come here, which is part of its charm: you will find quiet beaches, friendly people, a mix of Timorese and Portuguese influences, and clear tropical water just a short ride from the city. The local currency is the US dollar, which makes things simple for many visitors.

The best-known sight is the Cristo Rei statue, a large figure of Christ standing on a headland at the eastern end of the bay. A long staircase leads up to it, with beautiful views over the coast, and below it are calm beaches for swimming and snorkelling. In the city you can visit the Timorese Resistance Archive and Museum to learn about the country's recent history, and shop for tais, the colourful hand-woven textiles of Timor. A ferry or boat takes you to Atauro Island, north of Dili, known for its rich coral reefs, excellent diving and snorkelling, and simple guesthouses by the sea. Dili has an international airport with flights from Bali and Darwin. The best time to visit is the dry season, roughly May to October.
