Why visit Cayenne?

Cayenne is the capital of French Guiana, an overseas region of France on the northeast coast of South America. Because it is part of France and the European Union, the currency is the euro and the official language is French, but the mood is Caribbean and Amazonian, shaped by Creole, Indigenous, Maroon, Hmong, Brazilian and many other communities. The town is small, colourful and relaxed, with wooden Creole houses, a lively market and the palm-filled Place des Palmistes at its heart.

Walk up to the ruins of Fort Cépérou for views over the town and the sea, then try local dishes and tropical fruit at the central market. Cayenne is also the base for two famous trips along the coast. Boats from Kourou sail to the Îles du Salut, where you can explore the remains of the old penal colony on Île Royale and look across to Devil's Island. In Kourou itself, the Guiana Space Centre, Europe's spaceport, offers guided visits, and with luck you may even see a rocket launch. Rainforest walks, river outings and sea turtles nesting on nearby beaches add plenty of nature. Most visitors fly in from Paris, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required. The best time to visit is August to November, the main dry season.
