Why visit Cape Verde?

Cape Verde is an archipelago of ten volcanic islands in the Atlantic, about 570 kilometres off the coast of West Africa. With warm sunshine almost all year, a mix of African and Portuguese culture and a relaxed lifestyle summed up in the phrase 'no stress', it is a growing winter-sun destination.

The islands are very different. Sal and Boa Vista are flat and sandy, with long white beaches such as Santa Maria on Sal and excellent kitesurfing; Sal also has the Pedra de Lume salt crater, where you can float in salt water inside an old volcano. Santo Antão is green and mountainous, with some of the best hiking in the Atlantic. Fogo is dominated by an active volcano whose crater holds villages and vineyards. São Vicente is the cultural heart, with the town of Mindelo and its music scene and carnival; Cape Verde's morna music was popularised by Cesária Évora. Try cachupa, the national stew of corn and beans, and grogue sugar-cane spirit.
