Why visit Ouarzazate?

Ouarzazate is a town in southern Morocco, on the southern side of the High Atlas mountains. Known as the "door of the desert", it is the gateway to the Draa Valley, the Dadès Valley and the Sahara. It is also a film-making centre, and its landscapes appear in many famous films and TV series.

The road from Marrakech crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, one of Morocco's most scenic drives. Near Ouarzazate, the fortified village of Aït Benhaddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has appeared in films such as Gladiator. In town, Taourirt Kasbah is a large earthen kasbah once belonging to the Glaoui family. Atlas Studios offers tours of film sets used in many productions. East of the town lie the palm groves and kasbahs of Skoura and the Valley of Roses around Kelaat M'Gouna. Tagines, couscous and mint tea are the everyday staples, often served in traditional riads and kasbahs.
