Why visit Cape Coast?

Cape Coast is a historic town on the Atlantic coast of Ghana, west of Accra. It was once the colonial capital of the Gold Coast and a major centre of the transatlantic slave trade. Today it is one of Ghana's most important places for history, heritage and remembrance.

Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO-listed fort on the seafront, can be visited on guided tours of its dungeons and the "Door of No Return". A short drive west, Elmina Castle (St George's Castle) is one of the oldest European-built buildings in sub-Saharan Africa. North of the town, Kakum National Park protects tropical rainforest and is known for its canopy walkway suspended high above the forest floor. The busy fishing harbours, with their colourful wooden canoes, are full of life in the morning. Every year, the town celebrates the Fetu Afahye festival with processions and drumming. Try local dishes such as kenkey with fried fish, banku and red-red.
