Why visit Areopoli?

Areopoli is the main village of the Mani, the rugged peninsula in the far south of the Peloponnese, and one of the best-preserved traditional settlements in Greece. Its lanes are lined with grey stone tower houses built by Maniot clans who spent centuries feuding with each other, and many have been restored as guesthouses.

The village square is named after Petros Mavromichalis, whose statue recalls the declaration of the Maniot uprising here in 1821 at the start of the Greek War of Independence. The Church of the Taxiarches has carved reliefs over its doors, and in the evening the old streets glow under their lamps. Eight kilometres south are the Diros caves, where you glide by boat through an underground lake hung with stalactites. Nearby Limeni is a tiny turquoise bay below the Mavromichalis tower, and the road south leads past Vathia's towers to Cape Tainaro. Eat Maniot specialities such as siglino and lalangia in the village tavernas.
