How many days in Zagori? 4 days of stone villages, bridges and the Vikos Gorge
By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated
Zagori is a mountain region of Epirus, north of Ioannina, with about 46 villages of grey stone and slate, linked for centuries by cobbled mule paths and arched bridges. Through its middle runs the Vikos Gorge, about 900 metres deep. Give it four days: the villages are spread out, the roads wind, and the best of the region is on foot. Split your stay between the central villages around Monodendri and the western ones around Papingo, which are an hour apart by road.
Short answer
Three days covers Monodendri, the gorge walk and Papingo. Four days adds the bridges of central Zagori and either the Drakolimni climb or a morning on the Voidomatis river, which turns the trip from a tour into a stay.
The 4-day plan, day by day
Day 1: Monodendri, Oxya and the bridges
Morning. Drive about 40 minutes from Ioannina to Monodendri. Walk 10 minutes down the stone path to the 15th-century monastery of Agia Paraskevi, built on the very edge of the Vikos Gorge, then drive 7 km to the Oxya viewpoint, a rock balcony over the deepest part of the gorge.
Afternoon. Head to the area of Kipi and Koukouli for the stone bridges: the three-arched Plakidas (Kalogeriko) bridge, the Kokkoris bridge and the Kontodimos bridge, all within a few kilometres. Short marked paths link several of them, and the cobbled lanes of Koukouli make a good 30-minute loop.
Evening. Stay in Monodendri, Vitsa or Dilofo, a car-free village where you park outside and walk in. Dinner in a stone taverna by the fire, €15-25 per person.
Fill up with fuel in Ioannina or Asprangeli. Petrol stations in Zagori are few and close early.
Day 2: Walk the Vikos Gorge
Morning. Start early from Monodendri, descending the steps beside Agia Paraskevi into the gorge. The classic walk to Vikos village or to the Papingo villages is about 12-14 km, roughly 5-7 hours, on a marked path (part of the O3 long-distance trail) through plane, oak and boulder fields.
Afternoon. Halfway, the springs of the Voidomatis river appear, cold and clear even in August. The last section climbs out of the gorge, about 1 hour up to Vikos village or 1h30 to Mikro Papingo.
Evening. Spend the night in Megalo Papingo or Mikro Papingo, at the foot of the grey Astraka towers. Order a taxi in advance if your car is in Monodendri; the transfer round by road takes about 1 hour and costs roughly €60-80.
Ask your guesthouse to arrange the car or luggage transfer. Carry 2 litres of water, food and good boots; there is no shop or café in the gorge.
Day 3: Papingo, Ovires and Drakolimni
Morning. Strong walkers climb from Mikro Papingo to the Astraka refuge (about 2.5-3 hours), then 1 hour across the meadows of Lakka Tsoumani to Drakolimni, the dragon lake at about 2,050 metres, full of alpine newts. Return the same way: plan 7-8 hours in total.
Afternoon. For an easier day, walk 15 minutes from Megalo Papingo to the Ovires, natural rock pools carved by a stream between the two Papingo villages, then take the 20-minute path to Mikro Papingo.
Evening. Dinner in Megalo Papingo. Look for batsaria, a cornmeal and greens pie, kichi pita, a thin rolled cheese pie, and lamb or goat from the mountain.
Drakolimni is a high-mountain walk. Check the weather in the morning, avoid storms in the afternoon, and do not go in snow, usually from November to May.
Day 4: Voidomatis, Aristi and the Beloi viewpoint
Morning. Drive 15 minutes down to the Klidonia or Aristi bridge on the Voidomatis, among the cleanest rivers in Europe. Book a rafting or kayaking trip (about €25-40 per person, 1.5-2 hours, suitable for beginners), or walk the riverside path from the Aristi bridge.
Afternoon. Drive about 1 hour east to Vradeto, one of the highest villages, and walk 20 minutes to the Beloi viewpoint, which looks into the gorge from the opposite side to Oxya. On the way, the Skala Vradetou, a zigzag stone stairway of the old mule road, climbs the cliff from Kapesovo.
Evening. Have a last dinner in Tsepelovo or Kapesovo, then return to Ioannina, about 1 hour.
Swimming in the Voidomatis is allowed in summer but the water stays around 10-14°C. Rafting runs mostly from spring to early autumn, depending on the water level.
Only have 3 days?
With 3 days, do Monodendri and the bridges, the gorge walk to Papingo, and the Ovires with the Voidomatis on the last morning. You lose Drakolimni and the eastern villages.
Got extra days?
Extra days go to Ioannina for the castle, the island in Lake Pamvotis and silverwork shops, to Konitsa and the Aoos gorge, or to the Metsovo mountain town, about 1 hour east. Long-distance hikers can cross Tymfi to Tsepelovo over two days with a night at the refuge.
Where to stay in Zagori

| Mid-range | Megalo and Mikro Papingo | End of the gorge walk, start of the Tymfi trails and the Ovires. | €90-160 |

Getting around
You need a car. The nearest airport and city is Ioannina, with flights from Athens and summer charters; Monodendri is about 40 km away and Papingo about 60 km. Rentals cost €30-50 a day. The roads are paved but narrow and winding, with goats and cows on the bends. KTEL Ioannina buses reach some villages only a few times a week. Hikers can rely on local taxis for one-way walks; book them through the guesthouses. From Athens the drive is about 5 hours via the Ionia Odos.
What to eat in Zagori
Zagori is famous for its pites. The local kichi pita is a coil of thin pastry with feta; batsaria uses cornmeal and wild greens; alevropita is a crisp pie of flour, butter and feta baked without layers. Mountain lamb and goat are roasted or cooked with greens, and in autumn wild mushrooms appear. Try trahanas soup in winter, local mountain tea and Epirus cheeses. A taverna meal with house wine costs €15-25 per person. Many guesthouses serve home-made pies and jams at breakfast.
Best time to visit
May to June and September to October are best for walking, with highs of 18-26°C, green valleys in spring and red beech forests in autumn. July and August are warm in the villages (28-32°C) but fine for the gorge if you start early. Winter brings snow, fires and Christmas visitors from Athens; high paths are closed by snow and some roads need chains.

Common questions
How hard is the Vikos Gorge walk?
It is a long day rather than a technical one: about 12-14 km and 5-7 hours from Monodendri to Vikos or Papingo, with a steep descent at the start and a climb at the end. The path is marked but stony. Fit walkers with good boots manage it easily. Do not go after heavy rain, when the riverbed can flood.
Can I do Zagori without hiking?
Yes. Most viewpoints, Oxya, Beloi and Agia Paraskevi, are a short walk from a car park, and the bridges are minutes from the road. The Ovires pools are 15 minutes from Megalo Papingo. Rafting on the Voidomatis needs no experience. The villages themselves are enough for a slow trip.
Which village should I stay in?
Stay in Monodendri, Vitsa or Dilofo for central Zagori and the start of the gorge, and in the Papingo villages for the end of the gorge, the Ovires and Mount Tymfi. With four days, two nights in each saves a lot of driving.
How do I get to Zagori?
Fly or drive to Ioannina. From Athens, the drive is about 5 hours via the Rio-Antirrio bridge and the Ionia Odos; from Thessaloniki, about 3 hours on the Egnatia motorway. From Ioannina, Monodendri is about 40 minutes and Papingo about 1 hour.
