How many days do you need in Yangshuo?

Spend 4 days to truly experience the karst landscape. Two days covers the highlights like the Li River and West Street, while four allows for slower cycling through Yulong River valley, exploring Moon Hill, and visiting Xingping ancient town without rushing through transport queues or local traffic.

Short answer

4 days is the sweet spot2 days is the minimum worth it

2 days

Focus on a Li River bamboo raft from Xingping, cycling the Yulong River trail to see Dragon Bridge, and evening strolls on West Street. This pace hits the postcard highlights efficiently, utilizing e-bikes for transit between rural sights, but leaves little time for deep exploration of remote caves or rural villages.

You give up: You lose the opportunity to hike the karst peaks, explore Silver Cave, or venture into the quieter villages further afield.

3 days

Include everything from the 2-day plan plus a guided morning hike up Moon Hill and an afternoon visiting Silver Cave. This pace accounts for the inevitable transport delays and provides buffer time to soak in the atmosphere at a riverside café in Fuli Bridge without feeling like you are racing.

You give up: You still skip full-day excursions like the Terraced Rice Fields or deeper photography trips into the remote countryside.

4 days

The ideal duration includes a full day trip to the Longji Rice Terraces. You have time for leisurely caving, deeper cycling through rural farmland, watching the Impression Sanjie Liu light show, and relaxing with local beer fish at sunset without the stress of rigid transit connections.

You give up: You are fully satisfied; you see the major sights and have time for true relaxation in the karst scenery.

If you can stay longer

Adding 3 days allows for a slower immersion in regional culture. You can take a dedicated day trip to the Longji Terraced Fields, explore the hidden markets of local villages, and participate in a cooking class focusing on authentic Yangshuo cuisine away from the tourist-heavy West Street crowds.

Common questions

Best way to get around?

Renting an e-bike is the best way to navigate between Yulong River and rural villages. They are cheap, easy to drive, and allow for flexibility. For longer distances like Xingping or the airport, use Didi or pre-booked private taxis to avoid the frustrations of infrequent local buses.

When is the best season?

Visit from April to May or September to October. Spring offers misty, atmospheric mountains, while autumn provides clear skies and pleasant cycling temperatures. Avoid July and August, as the heat is oppressive, the river water levels fluctuate, and the region becomes extremely crowded with domestic tour groups.

Are river cruises worth it?

The Li River cruise from Guilin is iconic, but note it takes 4-5 hours and can feel touristy. Many travelers prefer a shorter, more intimate bamboo raft ride from Xingping. It is faster, offers better photo opportunities of the scenery depicted on the 20 Yuan note, and feels less industrial.
