Why visit Yangshuo?

Yangshuo is a small town on the Li River in Guangxi, southern China, surrounded by the dramatic limestone karst peaks that appear on the back of the 20-yuan banknote. It is about an hour from Guilin and has become a relaxed base for cycling, rafting and rock climbing among the hills and rice fields.

Take a bamboo raft or cruise along the Li River from the Guilin direction, passing the Nine Horse Fresco Hill and the view at Xingping, then cycle or raft along the quieter Yulong River past old stone bridges such as the Dragon Bridge. Climb Moon Hill, named after the natural arch at its top, for views across the karst. In the evening, the West Street pedestrian area is lively with restaurants and bars, and the Impression Liu Sanjie show uses the river and lit-up peaks as a stage. Yangshuo is also one of China's best-known climbing areas. Try beer fish, a local speciality, rice noodles and stuffed snails.
