How many days do you need in Westfjords?
Give it 5 days. Distances are vast and roads often unpaved or winding. You need time to traverse the fjords to reach Dynjandi and the remote Hornstrandir without rushing through the dramatic, fog-prone mountain passes.
Short answer

3 days
Drive the southern coast to the massive Dynjandi waterfall. Visit the Arctic Fox Centre in Súðavík and explore the fishing heritage of Ísafjörður. You can fit in a quick soak at the Hellulaug natural hot pool.
You give up: You skip the remote Rauðisandur beach and the dramatic Látrabjarg bird cliffs.
5 days
Full loop including the red sands of Rauðisandur and puffin spotting at Látrabjarg. Visit the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft in Hólmavík and take a boat from Ísafjörður to the uninhabited Hornstrandir Nature Reserve.
You give up: You may miss deep exploration of the eastern Strandir coast.
7 days
Venture to the end of the road at Djúpavík in the Strandir region to see the abandoned herring factory. Add a guided multi-day trek in Hornstrandir or a kayaking trip in the calm waters of Seyðisfjörður.
You give up: Only the most inaccessible interior highlands remain unseen.
If you can stay longer
An extra 3 days allows for a boat trip to Vigur Island to see eider ducks and a dedicated day for the steep hike up Mount Bolafjall for views toward Greenland.

Common questions
Are roads accessible?
Many roads are gravel and narrow with steep drop-offs. Route 60 and 61 are main arteries, but winter closures are common. Check road.is frequently; even in summer, fog can slow your pace to 30km/h on mountain passes like Dynjandisheiði.
Is a 4WD necessary?
While main roads are paved, reaching Rauðisandur or the Strandir coast is significantly safer and more comfortable in a 4WD. Small cars struggle with steep gradients and loose gravel, often leading to tire damage or slower travel times.
When is the best time?
Visit between late June and August. Many museums and remote roads close from September to May. This window ensures the puffins are nesting at Látrabjarg and the hiking trails in Hornstrandir are free of dangerous snow patches.
