Why visit Westfjords?

The Westfjords are a wild, mountainous peninsula in the far northwest of Iceland, cut by deep fjords and joined to the rest of the country by only a narrow strip of land. Few people live here and far fewer tourists come than to the south coast, so you often have the steep green slopes, quiet fishing villages and empty bays almost to yourself. The largest town, Ísafjörður, is a friendly base with cafés, a harbour and boat trips.

The most famous sight is Dynjandi, a broad waterfall that spreads down a mountainside like a bridal veil, with smaller falls below it along a short path. In the south, the cliffs of Látrabjarg, the westernmost point of Iceland, are home to huge numbers of seabirds, and in summer you can watch puffins at close range. Nearby, Rauðasandur is a wide beach of golden-red sand. From Ísafjörður, boats run to the remote Hornstrandir nature reserve, a place for serious hikers and Arctic foxes. Roads here are long and winding, some sections are gravel, and a car is the easiest way to explore. You can fly from Reykjavík to Ísafjörður or take the Baldur car ferry from Stykkishólmur. The best time to visit is June to August, when roads are open and days are long.
