How many days do you need in Skyros?

4 days allows for the remote Sporadic charm. You need time for the winding Chora alleys, the Byzantine Castle, and navigating the island's distinct north-south divide. Factor in slow local bus transfers and long ferry rides from Kymi or flights from Athens.

Skyros

2 days

Explore Chora's white-washed streets, the Archaeological Museum, and the hilltop Monastery of Saint George. Relax at Magazia beach and see the rare Skyrian ponies at a local farm.

You give up: You skip the rugged southern coast, Palamari prehistoric site, and the pine forests of the north.

4 days

Add a drive to the northern forests, swimming at Atsitsa Bay, and exploring the rocky landscapes of the south. Visit the Grave of Rupert Brooke and enjoy long seafood lunches in Linaria port.

You give up: You miss leisurely boat trips to the uninhabited Sarakiniko islet or deeper hiking trails.

6 days

A full immersion including a day boat trip to Glyfada beach on Sarakiniko, hiking the Mount Kochylas trails, and visiting artisan wood-carving workshops in Chora for authentic souvenirs.

You give up: Only the most obscure sea caves and the smallest, inaccessible coves remain unseen.

If you can stay longer

Extra time allows a day trip to the uninhabited islet of Skyropoula or a dedicated day for the Faltaits Folklore Museum's extensive archives, plus quiet evenings in the traditional kafeneios.

Common questions

How do I get there?

Most fly from Athens via Aegean or take a ferry from Kymi on Evia. The ferry takes 1 hour 40 minutes, but the drive from Athens to Kymi takes nearly 3 hours. Plan for a full travel day.

Do I need a car?

Yes, a rental is essential. While Chora is walkable, the island’s best beaches like Agios Fokas and the southern wilderness are far apart with very limited bus service. Roads are winding but paved in the north.

Best time to visit?

June or September offer perfect weather without the August meltemi winds. February is unique for the 'Apokries' carnival featuring the famous Goat Dance, though many tourist facilities remain closed during the winter months.
