How many days do you need in Sarande?
Give Sarande 4 days to experience the Albanian Riviera properly. This allows time to explore the vibrant promenade, relax on Ksamil's islands, and uncover ancient ruins without rushing. Shorter stays miss the historical depth and natural beauty, reducing your trip to a hurried beach stopover with heavy traffic bottlenecks.
Short answer

2 days
You realistically see Sarande's main promenade, climb to Lekuresi Castle for sunset panoramic views, and spend a half-day sunbathing at the nearby Ksamil beaches. Evening dining features fresh seafood at Limani while soaking in the lively coastal atmosphere and distant views of Corfu island.
You give up: You skip the UNESCO ruins of Butrint, the Blue Eye natural spring, and relaxing beach days in Gjipe.
4 days
You comfortably experience everything in the shorter plan plus a dedicated morning exploring Butrint National Park's ancient ruins. You also visit the Blue Eye spring, take a boat trip to the Ksamil Islands, and spend an afternoon wandering through the historic stone alleys of Gjirokaster.
You give up: You miss deep hikes in Llogara Pass and secluded southern beaches like Kakome.
7 days
You cover all highlights of the 4-day plan plus slower beach hopping to Borsh and Qeparo. You add a full-day trip to Himare, explore Porto Palermo Castle, and enjoy unhurried evenings sampling raki and local cuisine without constantly watching the clock.
You give up: You sacrifice nothing; this pace covers the entire southern coastline thoroughly.
If you can stay longer
An extra 2 to 3 days buys a rewarding day trip inland to Gjirokaster, a UNESCO-listed stone city with a massive fortress and Ottoman-era architecture. You can also venture north to explore the wild beaches of Dhermi and hike through the dramatic landscapes of Llogara National Park.

Common questions
Do I need a car in Sarande?
Renting a car is highly recommended if you want to visit Butrint, the Blue Eye, and remote beaches like Ksamil efficiently. Local buses exist but run infrequently and can be overcrowded during peak summer months, making independent driving much faster and more reliable.
Is Sarande walkable?
The city center and main seaside promenade are very walkable and pedestrian-friendly. However, reaching uphill areas like Lekuresi Castle requires a steep climb or a short taxi ride, and walking along the main highway outside the center lacks sidewalks and proper lighting.
When is the best time to visit?
June and September offer warm beach weather, open hotels, and manageable crowds. July and August are peak months with heavy traffic, fully booked beaches, and high prices, while spring and late autumn are too quiet for a true coastal holiday.
