How many days do you need in Rangiroa?
4 days allows for the drift snorkel at Tiputa Pass and a boat excursion to the Blue Lagoon. Beyond 4 days, the repetitive nature of atoll life sets in unless you are a hardcore diver. It is about timing tides and boat schedules which dictate the pace.
Short answer

2 days
Focus exclusively on the Tiputa Pass. You will do two drift dives or snorkels to see dolphins and sharks, plus a sunset watching session at the pass. It is a quick hit for world-class marine life near the main pier area and Avatoru.
You give up: You skip the Blue Lagoon and Ile aux Récifs, which require full-day boat commitments.
4 days
The perfect window. Day 1-2 for Tiputa Pass and Avatoru Pass diving. Day 3 is a full-day boat trip to the Blue Lagoon for turquoise wading and shark nurseries. Day 4 visit Gauguin’s Pearl farm and bike the flat roads between the two passes.
You give up: You miss the remote 'Sables Roses' (Pink Sands) which is a grueling 2-hour boat ride each way.
6 days
This pace allows for the Sables Roses excursion, a long trek to the far side of the atoll. You can spend extra time at the Vin de Tahiti vineyard and add deep-sea fishing or multiple repeat dives to catch different tidal flows at the passes.
You give up: Nothing major is missed; you simply trade intensity for a slower, island-time relaxation vibe.
If you can stay longer
An extra 2-3 days permits a day trip to the Pink Sands (Sables Roses) or a secondary excursion to Ile aux Récifs to see fossilized coral formations. It also buffers against windy weather that frequently cancels boat departures to the lagoon.

Common questions
Is a car rental necessary?
No, the main motu is tiny and flat. Most pensions provide bicycles which are perfect for the 10km stretch between Avatoru and Tiputa. For longer distances or lagoon tours, operators pick you up directly from your accommodation's dock or the main pier.
When is the best time for dolphins?
Dolphins are residents at Tiputa Pass year-round. They are most active during the outgoing tide when they play in the standing waves. You can see them from the shore at sunset, but diving with them requires following the instructions of local dive masters.
Can I swim everywhere?
Not safely. The passes have extremely strong currents that can pull you out to sea. Stick to the designated lagoon spots like the 'Aquarium' near the Tiputa opening or join guided boat tours to ensure you are swimming in safe, slack-water areas.
