Why visit Rangiroa?
Rangiroa is a huge coral atoll in the Tuamotu Islands of French Polynesia, and one of the largest atolls in the world. A thin ring of low islets and white sand surrounds a lagoon so wide that you cannot see the far side from the shore. Life here is slow and quiet, with a few small villages, pearl farms and simple guesthouses, but under the water Rangiroa is one of the most exciting places in the South Pacific.
The highlight is the Tiputa Pass, a channel where the ocean and the lagoon meet. Divers ride the strong currents past grey reef sharks, schools of fish and the bottlenose dolphins that often play in the pass, and from the shore you can sometimes watch dolphins jumping in the waves. Even non-divers can snorkel the calmer areas with a guide. Day trips by boat go to the Blue Lagoon, a shallow, bright turquoise lagoon inside the lagoon, with small motu islets and baby reef sharks, and to the pink sand beaches on the far side of the atoll. You can also visit a pearl farm to see how black pearls are grown. Rangiroa is reached by Air Tahiti flights from Papeete on Tahiti. The best time to visit is the drier season from May to October.
