How many days do you need in Nisyros?
Give Nisyros 4 days to truly absorb its volcanic atmosphere. Two days is too rushed for ferry timetables, the Stefanos crater, and cliffside villages like Mandraki and Nikia. Four days allows you to hike the caldera floor, soak in Thermia hot springs, and explore without constantly checking your watch.
Short answer

2 days
You dock in Mandraki, rent a scooter, and visit the Stefanos and Polybotes craters. Afternoon wandering through the white-and-blue alleys of Nikia and the cliffside Panagia Spiliani monastery.
You give up: You skip the Paloi hot springs, mountain hiking trails, lazy taverna lunches in Emporios, and the peaceful offshore island of Giali.
3 days
Covers the volcanic craters, Mandraki's castle, Nikia's volcano-view square, and a hike up to Paleokastro acropolis. Plus an afternoon soaking in the thermal springs at Thermia.
You give up: You miss exploring the abandoned stone village of Emporios and taking a dedicated day trip to explore surrounding islets.
4 days
The ideal pace. Explore Mandraki, hike the dramatic caldera floor, wander Emporios' ruined houses, enjoy sunset dinners in Nikia, and unwind in the thermal waters of Thermia.
You give up: Nothing vital for a first visit; you get a complete, unhurried experience of the island's unique volcanic culture.
If you can stay longer
An extra 2-3 days lets you slow down and take a boat day trip to the volcanic islet of Gyali for remote pebble beaches and swimming. You can also thoroughly hike the ancient paths connecting Emporios to Mandraki, explore hidden sea caves, and spend lazy afternoons reading in quiet tavernas without rushing.

Common questions
How do I get to Nisyros?
Nisyros has no airport, so you take a ferry from the nearby island of Kos. Ferries run daily during summer, taking about one hour from Kardamena or Mandraki port. You can also visit on a day trip from Kos, but staying overnight lets you experience the volcano after day-tourists leave.
Do I need a car or scooter on Nisyros?
Yes, renting a car or scooter is essential because public buses are infrequent and don't align well with crater visits or remote villages like Nikia and Emporios. The island is small, so a 125cc scooter or small car is plenty to navigate the steep, winding mountain roads safely.
Can you actually walk inside the volcano?
Yes, you can walk right down into the Stefanos crater via a paved path. The crater floor is sulfurous, bubbling, and very hot, so wear sturdy closed-toe shoes with thick soles. Avoid visiting at midday in peak summer when the heat trapped in the caldera becomes intense.
