How many days do you need in Lijiang?
Give Lijiang 4 days to balance the commercialized Old Town with high-altitude nature. You need time for the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain queues and acclimatization. It serves as a vital base for the Tiger Leaping Gorge trek and exploring authentic Naxi culture in Baisha or Shuhe villages.
Short answer

2 days
Focus on Dayan Old Town's Black Dragon Pool and Mufu Palace. Spend your second day at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain including the Glacier Park cable car and Blue Moon Valley. You will experience the main highlights but at a very frantic, crowded pace.
You give up: You skip the Tiger Leaping Gorge hike and the quieter, authentic vibes of Baisha Village.
4 days
Includes Dayan and the mountain, plus a full day for Baisha and Shuhe old towns for Naxi embroidery. Adds a scenic day trip to Lashihai Lake for bird watching or the First Bend of the Yangtze River, allowing for a relaxed pace.
You give up: You lack time for the multi-day high trail trek at Tiger Leaping Gorge or Lugu Lake.
6 days
Covers all Lijiang sights plus a 2-day excursion to Lugu Lake to visit the Mosuo people. Alternatively, use the extra time for the classic 2-day hike through Tiger Leaping Gorge, staying overnight in a guesthouse overlooking the Jinsha River.
You give up: Only missing very remote northern Yunnan peaks or slow-travel immersion in rural villages.
If you can stay longer
An extra 3 days allows for the 4-hour drive to Lugu Lake. This high-altitude lake offers boat rides and cultural insights into the Mosuo matriarchal society, which is distinct from Lijiang's Naxi heritage and far less crowded than the main tourist zones.

Common questions
Is the altitude a problem?
Lijiang is at 2,400m, which is generally fine, but Jade Dragon Snow Mountain exceeds 4,500m. Buy canned oxygen in town before heading up the cable car, stay hydrated, and avoid heavy exercise on your first afternoon to let your body adjust to the thinner air.
Dayan or Shuhe?
Dayan is the famous 'Lijiang Old Town' with more shops and nightlife but it is extremely crowded. Shuhe is smaller, quieter, and feels more authentic. Stay in Shuhe for a peaceful atmosphere but visit Dayan at night once for the spectacular lanterns and vibrant canal-side scenery.
When should I visit?
Spring (March to May) and Autumn (October to November) are ideal for clear skies and blooming flowers. Avoid the first week of October and Chinese New Year, as crowds become overwhelming, prices triple, and queues for the mountain cable cars can last several hours even with reservations.
