Why visit Lijiang?

Lijiang is a town in Yunnan province in south-west China, at about 2,400 metres, under the snow-capped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Its Old Town of narrow lanes, canals and wooden houses, built by the Naxi people, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China's most popular destinations.

Wander Dayan Old Town's cobbled streets and canals, climb to Lion Hill for the view over the tiled roofs, and see the Black Dragon Pool with the snow mountain reflected in the water. The quieter old towns of Shuhe and Baisha are nearby, and Baisha has Naxi murals. Take a cable car up Jade Dragon Snow Mountain to the high viewing platforms, and watch the outdoor Impression Lijiang show at its foot. Further away is Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the deepest gorges in the world, with a famous two-day trek. Naxi music concerts are held in the old town. Try Naxi baba flatbread, yak meat and cross-the-bridge noodles.
