How many days do you need in Elounda?

4 days is perfect. Elounda is for luxury and slow pace. You need time for the Spinalonga boat trip, exploring Plaka village, and a day at Kolokitha beach. Any less feels rushed given the 75-minute transfer from Heraklion airport and the steep, winding local roads.

Elounda

2 days

Focus on Spinalonga island fortress and the sunken city of Olous. Spend one afternoon at a bayfront taverna in Plaka. You will see the main harbor but spend most time in your resort due to hilly logistics.

You give up: You miss the Lasithi Plateau, Agios Nikolaos town, and the secluded coves of the Kolokitha peninsula.

4 days

Visit Spinalonga early to beat crowds, then hike to the wind turbines above town. Dedicate a full day to the boutiques and Voulismeni lake in nearby Agios Nikolaos. Enjoy a long boat trip to private swimming spots.

You give up: You skip the far eastern beaches like Vai and the deep history of Knossos Palace.

7 days

A full week allows for a rental car. Explore Kritsa village, the Panagia Kera church, and the Minoan Palace of Malia. Include a long day trip to the south coast or the high-altitude Dikteon Cave.

You give up: Very little, though the western side of Crete remains too far for a comfortable day trip.

If you can stay longer

An extra 3 days allows a rugged excursion to the Vai Palm Forest or a journey to the south coast's Ierapetra to catch a ferry to the uninhabited, golden-sand Chrysi Island.

Common questions

Is Spinalonga worth the trip?

Yes, it is the top site. Take the small boat from Plaka (7 mins) rather than Elounda (25 mins) to save time and avoid seasickness. Go at 9:00 AM before the large tour buses arrive from Heraklion to experience the ruins in silence.

Do I need a car in Elounda?

If staying in a hillside resort, yes. Taxis are expensive and the walk down is steep. A car is essential for visiting Agios Nikolaos or the Lasithi Plateau, though the village center itself is walkable once you are down at the harbor.

Where is the best beach?

The main Elounda beach is small. For better water, head to Kolokitha. It requires a drive over a dirt causeway and a 10-minute hike, but the turquoise water is superior. For pebble beaches with views, Plaka is the best local alternative.
