How many days in Antigua and Barbuda? 5 days: beaches, Nelson's Dockyard and a Barbuda crossing
By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated
Antigua is small, about 22 km across, yet many visitors never leave their resort beach. Give it five days and use them well: one for the capital and the west-coast beaches, one for English Harbour, where the Royal Navy kept its Caribbean fleet, one for the rainforest and the wild Atlantic side, and a full day on Barbuda, the flat sister island with an 18 km pink-sand beach. Plan the English Harbour day for a Sunday, when the steel band plays at Shirley Heights.
Short answer
Three days covers St John's, Nelson's Dockyard with Shirley Heights and one beach day. Five days adds the east coast, the rainforest drive and the boat to Barbuda.

The 5-day plan, day by day
Day 1: St John's and the west-coast beaches
Morning. Start in St John's at the twin-towered St John's Cathedral, rebuilt in stone after the 1843 earthquake, then walk 5 minutes downhill to the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda in the old 1750 courthouse (a small donation of a few EC dollars). Finish at Redcliffe Quay, restored stone warehouses where enslaved people were once held before sale.
Afternoon. Take a minibus or 10-minute taxi north to Dickenson Bay, or go south to Darkwood Beach and Valley Church Beach, calm turquoise water with beach bars and loungers for about EC$25-50 a pair. Snorkelling gear rents for roughly EC$30 a day.
Evening. Watch sunset from Fort James at the mouth of St John's harbour, then eat grilled fish or lobster (in season, roughly July to April) on the beach at Dickenson Bay, where mains cost EC$60-120.
When several cruise ships are in port, Heritage Quay and the town centre fill up from 9:00 to 16:00. Check the cruise schedule and do St John's on a quiet day.
Day 2: Nelson's Dockyard and Shirley Heights
Morning. Drive 35-40 minutes south to Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbour, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016 and the only working Georgian dockyard in the world. The national park ticket is about EC$22 (US$8) and covers the dockyard museum, the old copper and lumber store and the boatyards.
Afternoon. Swim at Pigeon Point Beach, 5 minutes away in Falmouth Harbour, or walk the Middle Ground Trail (about 1 hour) up to Fort Berkeley at the harbour mouth. Lunch in the dockyard costs EC$45-80.
Evening. Climb to the Shirley Heights Lookout, 150 metres above both harbours. On Sundays from about 16:00 a steel band plays and then a reggae band, with barbecued ribs and rum punch; entry is roughly EC$40-55. The view at sunset is the most photographed in Antigua.
Taxis wait at Shirley Heights until the party ends around 22:00, but agree the fare back to your hotel before you get in; fares are fixed by zone, not metered.
Day 3: Fig Tree Drive, Betty's Hope and Devil's Bridge
Morning. Drive Fig Tree Drive, the twisting road through the southwest rainforest (locals call bananas 'figs'), and stop at Wallings Nature Reserve for its old reservoir and short trails. From the road you see Mount Obama, the highest point at 402 metres.
Afternoon. Cross the island to Betty's Hope, the first large sugar plantation of 1674, with one restored windmill (about EC$15). Continue 20 minutes to Devil's Bridge, a natural limestone arch where Atlantic waves blow through holes in the rock, and finish at Half Moon Bay, a wide pink-tinged beach with stronger surf.
Evening. Return west for dinner in Jolly Harbour, a marina village with a supermarket, bars and restaurants where mains cost EC$50-100.
Rent a car for this day: a local driving permit is required and costs about EC$50 (US$20) through the rental company. Drive on the left and watch for goats.
Day 4: Barbuda day trip
Morning. Take the Barbuda Express ferry from St John's at about 9:00; the crossing takes around 90 minutes and can be rough. Day tours including the boat, a guide and lunch cost roughly EC$500-650 per person.
Afternoon. A small boat crosses Codrington Lagoon to the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, one of the largest colonies in the Caribbean; males inflate red throat pouches from September to April. Then swim at Princess Diana Beach or walk the pale pink sand of 11 Mile Beach.
Evening. The ferry returns to St John's around 17:00. Eat simply in town or at your hotel; after a day at sea most people are in bed early.
Barbuda was badly damaged by Hurricane Irma in 2017 and has very few shops or restaurants. Bring cash in EC dollars, water and sun protection.
Day 5: Sailing, stingrays or a lazy beach
Morning. Join a catamaran day sail around the island or to Great Bird Island off the northeast coast, with snorkelling stops; full days cost roughly EC$350-450 with lunch and drinks. Families often prefer Stingray City, a shallow sandbar where you stand among southern stingrays (about EC$200).
Afternoon. If you skip the boat, spend the day at Ffryes Beach or Galley Bay, two quiet west-coast beaches with soft sand and good afternoon light.
Evening. Finish at Sheer Rocks or one of the cliff restaurants near Ffryes for a last sunset dinner (EC$150-300 per person), or go back to the Sunday or Thursday events in English Harbour if they fall on your last night.
Antigua claims 365 beaches; all are public by law, even those in front of resorts, though resorts may restrict loungers and bars to guests.
Only have 3 days?
With 3 days, do Day 1 and Day 2 as written and use Day 3 for Devil's Bridge and Half Moon Bay in the morning and a west-coast beach after lunch. You lose Barbuda and the day sail.
Got extra days?
A 6th or 7th day suits an overnight on Barbuda in one of its few guesthouses, or a fast ferry or short flight to Montserrat to see the volcano-buried former capital, Plymouth, from the observatory.

Getting around
Private minibuses with green 'BUS' number plates leave St John's from the West Bus Station (for Jolly Harbour and English Harbour) and the East Bus Station (for the east), costing roughly EC$3-5 a ride, but they stop early in the evening and rarely run on Sundays. Taxis use fixed fares by zone: about EC$35-45 from V.C. Bird International Airport to St John's and EC$90-110 to English Harbour. A rental car (EC$130-200 a day plus the temporary driving permit) is the easiest way to see the whole island in a day.
What to eat in Antigua and Barbuda
The national dish is fungie and pepperpot: a cornmeal and okra mash with a thick stew of meat and vegetables, eaten on Saturdays. Ducana (sweet potato dumpling) with saltfish is the other classic, and the Antigua black pineapple is famously sweet. Local cafés and roadside stalls serve curry chicken, goat water stew and roti for EC$20-35. In restaurants, expect EC$60-120 for a fish main. Drink Wadadli beer (Wadadli is the old Amerindian name for Antigua), English Harbour rum, or a rum punch. Saturday mornings are best at the public market on Market Street in St John's for fruit and vegetables.
Best time to visit
December to April is dry, sunny and breezy, with 27-30°C, and the busiest and most expensive season. Antigua Sailing Week fills English Harbour in late April or early May, and Carnival runs from late July to the first Tuesday of August. The hurricane season lasts from June to November, peaking from August to October, when some small hotels close and prices fall.

Common questions
Do I need a car in Antigua?
Not for a beach holiday, but it helps for a few days. Minibuses are cheap and cover the main roads, yet they finish early and barely run on Sundays, and taxis add up quickly at EC$90 or more between the coasts. Renting a car for two or three days, with the temporary driving permit, lets you do the rainforest, Devil's Bridge and English Harbour at your own pace.
Is a day trip to Barbuda worth it?
Yes, if you like nature and empty beaches. The Frigate Bird Sanctuary and the pink sand of 11 Mile Beach are unlike anything on Antigua. It is a long day with about three hours on the boat, which can be choppy, so take seasickness tablets if you need them. Book a tour that includes the lagoon boat, because transport on Barbuda is limited.
Which is the best beach in Antigua?
It depends what you want. For calm swimming and sunsets, Darkwood, Valley Church and Ffryes on the west coast. For space and surf, Half Moon Bay on the Atlantic side. Pigeon Point is closest to English Harbour, and Dickenson Bay has the most bars and water sports. Atlantic beaches can have strong currents; swim where locals swim.
When is the Shirley Heights party?
Every Sunday from late afternoon to about 22:00, all year, with a steel band first and a reggae or soca band after dark. In high season there is also a smaller Thursday evening event. Arrive by 17:00 for sunset over English Harbour, bring cash for food and drinks, and arrange your taxi back in advance.
