Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest cost: even central hostel doubles in Te Aro cost about NZ$100-160, and waterfront hotels NZ$200-330. Eating out is the next big item, with mains around NZ$28-40 including 15% GST. Paid experiences such as Weta Workshop (about NZ$55-60) and Zealandia's night tour (about NZ$90-100) add up, but Te Papa's general entry, the Botanic Garden and Parliament tours are free.
When it is cheaper
Hotel rates are usually lower in winter (June to August), outside major events, and on weekends when business travel drops; big events such as the World of WearableArt show and major rugby matches push prices up.
How to spend less
- Visit Te Papa, the Wellington Museum and Parliament, which are free.
- Walk up Mount Victoria and through the Botanic Garden instead of paying for tours.
- Eat at the Cuba Street Night Market on Fridays (dishes about NZ$10-15).
- Use a Snapper card or contactless on Metlink buses and trains.
- Take the cable car up and walk down through the Botanic Garden to save a fare.
- Check weekend rates: central hotels aimed at business travellers are often cheaper Friday to Sunday.
