Is Taipei expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Taipei is good value: cheaper than Tokyo, Hong Kong or Singapore for food and transport, though hotels are moderately priced rather than cheap. Plan on about NT$1,500 a day per person on a budget, NT$3,950 mid-range and NT$11,300 for comfort. Accommodation takes most of the money; night-market food and the MRT are very cheap.

Where the money goes
Hotels are the main cost, with mid-range rooms in Zhongshan or Ximending at NT$2,500–5,500 and luxury hotels in Xinyi far more. Food is the best-value part of a stay: a full night-market dinner or a breakfast-shop meal costs little, although famous dumpling chains, hot pot and fine dining cost much more. Sights are cheap — temples and many museums are free or inexpensive — with Taipei 101 and the Palace Museum the main ticketed attractions. Day trips to Jiufen and Shifen add bus or train fares and small extras like sky lanterns.
When it is cheaper
Prices are fairly stable through the year, but hotels are often cheaper on weeknights and in the hot, humid summer outside school holidays. Lunar New Year, the Lantern Festival and New Year's Eve at Taipei 101 push prices up.
How to spend less
- Use an EasyCard on the MRT, buses and YouBike, and for purchases in convenience stores.
- Eat at night markets and breakfast shops; skip hotel breakfasts.
- Climb Elephant Mountain for free views of Taipei 101 instead of paying for the observatory.
- Choose Ningxia or Raohe night markets over the busiest Shilin stalls, which can charge more for smaller portions.
- Take the Airport MRT from Taoyuan instead of a taxi.
- Use public hot-spring baths in Beitou, which cost from about NT$60.
