Is Siena expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Siena is moderately expensive: a little cheaper than Florence for rooms, but pricier than most of central Italy, especially on and around the Campo. A realistic budget day is about €95 per person, mid-range about €190, and the money goes on beds inside the walls, museum tickets and meals with a view.

Where the money goes
Rooms inside the walls are the main cost, about €120–220 a night, with cheaper hotels outside the walls near the station at about €70–120. Tickets add up: the tower, the Museo Civico, the OPA SI pass and Santa Maria della Scala together cost roughly €45–60 per person. Restaurants facing the Campo charge noticeably more than those a few streets away. Day trips to the Val d'Orcia need a car or tour. During the Palio on 2 July and 16 August, hotel prices rise sharply. Siena also charges a tourist tax of about €2–5 per person per night.
When it is cheaper
From November to March, except Christmas, rooms are usually clearly cheaper and easier to find; the Palio days in July and August are the most expensive of the year.
How to spend less
- Eat 3–5 minutes from the Campo, where prices drop by about a third.
- Buy the combined ticket for the Torre del Mangia and Museo Civico.
- Use the OPA SI pass for the whole Duomo complex instead of separate tickets.
- Stay outside the walls near the station and use the escalators up to the centre.
- Take the direct bus from Florence instead of renting a car for the city.
- Avoid the Palio dates unless you specifically want the race.
