Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost: simpler hotels in Hadaba and Old Sharm start at about EGP 2,000–3,500 a night, Naama Bay and the all-inclusive resorts of Sharks Bay and Nabq Bay EGP 3,500–8,000, and luxury resorts with private reefs EGP 9,000–25,000. All-inclusive deals shift food costs into the room price. Boat trips and dives are the other big spend, usually quoted in euros. Local food in the Old Market is cheap, while alcohol in hotels and tourist restaurants is expensive. Taxis can be costly if you do not agree the fare first.
When it is cheaper
June to September is usually cheaper because of the heat, apart from European school holidays. Prices peak around Christmas, New Year and Easter.
How to spend less
- Compare all-inclusive packages with room-only rates; if you plan to eat out often, room-only can be cheaper.
- Book boat trips and dives at licensed dive centres, not with street touts, and compare a few prices.
- Eat at least once in the Old Market, where koshari and taameya cost a fraction of resort prices.
- Agree taxi fares before getting in, or ask your hotel to book a car.
- Choose a hotel with a good house reef to snorkel for free every day.
- Bring your own mask and snorkel to avoid rental fees.
