Is Shanghai expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Shanghai is one of the most expensive cities in mainland China, but still cheaper than Hong Kong, Tokyo or Western capitals for food and transport. A budget day is about 280 yuan per person, mid-range about 910 yuan and comfort about 2,850 yuan; central hotels, observation decks, bars and international restaurants are where the money goes.

Where the money goes
Hotels are the largest cost, particularly near the Bund, Nanjing Road and in Pudong. Observation decks, river cruises, acrobatics shows and Disneyland tickets add up. Rooftop bars and international restaurants are priced like other world cities, while dumpling shops, noodle bars and breakfast stalls are cheap. The metro is inexpensive, and the Shanghai Museum is free with booking.
When it is cheaper
Hotel prices are usually lower in winter (outside the Spring Festival) and in the hot, rainy summer; they rise around Golden Week in early October, the 1–5 May holiday and major trade fairs.
How to spend less
- Eat breakfast and lunch at dumpling, noodle and wonton shops.
- Cross the river on the 2-yuan public ferry instead of an expensive cruise for the skyline view.
- Visit the free Shanghai Museum (booking required).
- Choose one observation deck; the view of the Bund is similar from each.
- Ride the metro, which is cheap and covers almost everything.
- Avoid tea-house invitations from friendly strangers near the Bund and Nanjing Road.
