Where the money goes
Day-to-day costs are low, but a few big items stand out: the Fansipan cable car, a guide for each trekking day, and a car with driver for Bac Ha or the O Quy Ho pass (about ₫1,200,000–2,000,000 a day). Rooms range from cheap town guesthouses to valley resorts. Food is good value, especially at the night grill stalls and local restaurants. Small entry fees are charged at villages and waterfalls.
When it is cheaper
Rooms are cheaper in the rainy months from about June to August and in midwinter, while September and October, Vietnamese public holidays and weekends are the busiest and most expensive.
How to spend less
- Book guides directly through local cooperatives or women-run groups.
- Sleep in a village homestay, which includes dinner.
- Check the summit weather before buying the Fansipan ticket.
- Eat at the night grill stalls near the church.
- Take the limousine bus from Hanoi instead of a private car.
- Travel on weekdays, avoiding Vietnamese holidays.
