Is San Miguel de Allende expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest cost: hostels and simple rooms in Colonia Guadalupe or San Antonio start at about MX$800–1,500, mid-range hotels in the Centro cost MX$2,000–4,000, and boutique hotels in colonial houses MX$5,000–12,000, plus VAT and a state lodging tax. Restaurants come next — the rooftop terraces and chef-led places near the Jardín charge visitor prices, about MX$400–900 per person with wine, plus a 10–15% tip. Sights are cheap (many churches and Bellas Artes are free), and taxis within town are inexpensive.
When it is cheaper
Outside Holy Week, the late-September San Miguel Arcángel festival, Día de Muertos and the Christmas–New Year period, hotel rates are usually lower, and the rainy season from June to September is often the quietest time. Check prices for your dates, as weddings and long weekends also fill hotels.
How to spend less
- Eat comida corrida in fondas away from the Jardín for a full lunch at MX$100–180.
- Go to the Tuesday market (Tianguis del Martes) for cheap tacos, gorditas and juices.
- Have a drink on a Jardín terrace for the view, but eat dinner a few blocks away.
- Pay in pesos rather than US dollars, and choose pesos when a card machine offers your home currency.
- Visit the free sights — the Parroquia, Bellas Artes and the churches — on foot.
- Take the first-class bus from Mexico City rather than a private transfer.
