Is Penang expensive? What things really cost in 2026

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost, from cheap guesthouses on Lebuh Chulia to restored mansions and beach resorts. Alcohol is heavily taxed in Malaysia, so beer and wine cost far more than food. Entry tickets to clan houses, mansions and Penang Hill are moderate. Hawker food, buses and Grab rides are very cheap, so everyday spending is low. Foreigners also pay a national tourism tax of RM 10 per room per night.
When it is cheaper
Prices change little through the year, but hotel rates rise around Chinese New Year and December holidays; the wetter months from September to November are often a little cheaper.
How to spend less
- Eat at hawker centres and street stalls rather than restaurants.
- Use the free CAT shuttle bus in George Town.
- Take Rapid Penang buses to Air Itam and the north coast.
- Buy beer from convenience stores rather than bars if you drink.
- Visit Penang National Park, which is free to enter (register at the office).
- Stay in a heritage guesthouse instead of a mansion hotel.
