Is New York expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Yes, New York is one of the most expensive cities in the world: a budget day costs about $175 per person and a mid-range day about $320, comparable with London and more than most of Europe. Hotels (before roughly 15% hotel taxes plus a nightly fee), restaurant meals with tax and an 18-20% tip, and big-ticket attractions are where the money goes; the subway, many parks and some of the best views are cheap or free.

Where the money goes
Hotels take the largest share: even Long Island City hotels across the river cost $180-260 a night, and Midtown or SoHo far more, before hotel taxes of roughly 15% plus a fixed per-room charge. Eating out adds up because menu prices exclude sales tax and a sit-down tip of 18-20% is expected. Observation decks (about $40), museums (about $30) and Broadway are the other big costs, while the subway caps your weekly fare and many sights are free.
When it is cheaper
January and February are the cheapest months for hotels, often 30-50% below December and the autumn peak; late summer weekdays can also be cheaper as business travel slows.
How to spend less
- Tap the same card or phone with OMNY: after 12 paid rides in 7 days, the rest of the week is free.
- Ride the free Staten Island Ferry past the Statue of Liberty if you don't need to land on the island.
- Buy same-day Broadway tickets at the TKTS booth or enter digital lotteries.
- Eat in Hell's Kitchen, Chinatown or Queens rather than around Times Square.
- Stay in Long Island City or Brooklyn, one subway stop or a few from Manhattan.
- Take the AirTrain plus subway from JFK (about $11) instead of a $70+ cab.
