Is Mongolia expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Day-to-day life in Mongolia is cheap, but travelling the country is not: almost every trip outside Ulaanbaatar needs a private 4x4, driver and often a guide, so transport dominates. A mid-range day averages about ₮550,000 per person (very roughly US$160), and sharing a vehicle with others is the single biggest saving.

Where the money goes
Transport takes the largest share by far: a 4x4 with driver costs about ₮350,000–600,000 a day plus fuel, an English-speaking guide adds ₮150,000–250,000 a day, and domestic flights to the Gobi or Khövsgöl are expensive. Ger camps with all meals cost roughly ₮120,000–250,000 per person. In Ulaanbaatar, mid-range hotels near Sükhbaatar Square run about ₮180,000–320,000 a double. Food and sights are cheap: museum and park fees are a few thousand to tens of thousands of tugrik, and local meals of buuz or khuushuur cost little.
When it is cheaper
Late May, early June and September are usually cheaper than July and August, and noticeably cheaper than Naadam week (11–13 July), when hotels and tours are at peak prices. From November to March most ger camps close, and city hotels are cheap but the cold is extreme.
How to spend less
- Join a shared tour from an Ulaanbaatar guesthouse to split the 4x4, driver and guide between 4–6 people.
- Compare agency prices in tugrik and US dollars; many quote all-inclusive rates in dollars.
- Avoid Naadam week if you are on a budget, or book far ahead.
- Stay with nomad families instead of tourist ger camps where possible; it is often cheaper and more authentic.
- Eat at local guanz canteens for buuz, khuushuur and tsuivan rather than international restaurants.
- Use the UBCab app in Ulaanbaatar to avoid taxi overcharging.
