Is Miami expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Yes, Miami is expensive: a budget day costs about US$160 per person and a mid-range day about US$345, close to New York and Los Angeles. Hotels (with Florida and local taxes and often a resort fee), restaurants that add an 18-20% service charge, and parking on Miami Beach take most of the money; Cuban food in Little Havana and the free trolley and Metromover are good value.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest cost: even budget hotels in North Beach or Downtown cost US$120-200 a double, and South Beach's Art Deco hotels US$220-400, before taxes and resort fees. Eating out is the next big item, because many restaurants add an automatic 18-20% service charge, and Ocean Drive drink prices are very high. You also pay for rideshares or a car to reach Little Havana, Wynwood, Coral Gables and the Everglades, plus expensive parking on Miami Beach.
When it is cheaper
Hotel rates are usually lowest from about May to October, the hot, stormy season, often 30-50% below the December-April peak; Art Basel week in early December, spring break in March and big events push prices sharply up.
How to spend less
- Read every bill for 'gratuity' or 'service charge' before tipping again.
- Ride the free Miami Beach Trolley and the free Metromover in Downtown and Brickell.
- Eat Cuban in Little Havana: a cafecito, croquetas and a cubano cost less than one Ocean Drive cocktail.
- Take the Metrorail between the airport and Downtown instead of a taxi.
- Avoid Art Basel week and spring break if you want normal hotel prices.
- Check hotel 'resort fees' and parking charges before booking; they can add US$30-60 a night.
